What Is DTF Printing? A Complete Beginner's Guide

Direct-to-Film (DTF) printing has taken the custom apparel world by storm — and for good reason. Whether you're running a custom T-shirt business, a sportswear brand, or a promotional merchandise shop, DTF technology offers unmatched flexibility, vibrant colors, and durability. If you're new to the world of DTF, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know.

What Is DTF Printing?

DTF printing is a digital decoration process where designs are printed directly onto a special PET film using specialized DTF inks (CMYK + White). The printed film is then coated with hot melt adhesive powder, cured in an oven or powder shaker, and finally heat-pressed onto the target fabric.

Unlike traditional screen printing, DTF requires no screens, no minimum order quantities, and no pre-treatment of the garment. It works on virtually any fabric — cotton, polyester, nylon, leather, and blends.

How Does the DTF Process Work?

Step 1 — Print the Design The design is printed in mirror image onto DTF film using a DTF printer loaded with CMYK + white inks. The white ink forms a base layer that makes colors pop on dark and colored garments.

Step 2 — Apply Hot Melt Powder While the ink is still wet, hot melt adhesive powder is applied to the printed film, either manually or via an automatic powder shaker. Excess powder is shaken off.

Step 3 — Cure the Powder The coated film is passed through a curing oven (or hover oven) at around 120–130°C to melt and bond the adhesive powder to the ink.

Step 4 — Heat Transfer The cured film is placed face-down on the garment and pressed with a heat press machine at approximately 160°C for 10–15 seconds.

Step 5 — Peel the Film After pressing, the PET film is peeled away (hot or cold, depending on film type), leaving behind a vivid, wash-resistant design.

What Equipment Do You Need?

To start a DTF printing operation, you need:

  • A DTF Printer — the heart of the system. XinFlying offers models ranging from A3 desktop printers to 24-inch industrial machines powered by Epson i3200-A1 printheads for high-volume production.
  • DTF Inks — specially formulated pigment inks for vivid, wash-fast results.
  • DTF Film — the PET transfer film (hot peel or cold peel variants available).
  • Hot Melt Adhesive Powder — polyurethane-based powder available in fine, medium, and coarse grades.
  • A Powder Shaker / Curing Oven — for powder application and curing.
  • A Heat Press Machine — for final transfer to the garment.

XinFlying provides all of these as part of a complete one-stop DTF solution, making it easy for beginners to get started without sourcing from multiple suppliers.
